Antique Dressel Mohawk Barge Canal Buoy Lamp New York State Erie Canal Nautical Kerosene Lantern
Up for sale is a lantern marked “Dressel Arlington NJ USA” and “Mohawk Lamp New York State Canals”, exact age unknown, but it was purchased in November 1974 and listed at the auction then as being 20-50 years old, so now it is between 67-97 years old. This is a huge lantern, measuring 22 ½” tall. Itis 10 ¼” diameter at the base, the lens is 8” diameter, and the top is 5” diameter (all measurements are approx.). It has a clear Fresnel lens; I see no cracks or chips in the clear lens and is solid with no loose pieces. The housing has several layers of paint and some scratches and chips in the iron but is in overall exceptionally good condition for its age. Please see photos for condition details. This lantern was obtained from an estate in Yuma, AZ, the buyer previously lived in NY. I read that this lantern was one of only eighty-five similar lanterns that marked the banks and buoys of the Erie Canal. Of those eighty-five, some had no shades while some had red or green shades.
With it comes the documents that were inside the lantern, and his receipt of payment for it at the auction. And other auction documents I have photos of but not able to post.
This is a remarkable piece of history from one of the earliest transportation modes of this country! Documents say construction: Iron with Brass Fittings.
