History of princely state of Mengani
The native ruler of the princely state of Mengani or Mengni held the title of Thakor. The ruling family of the state was Jadeja
Rajputs
.
The erstwhile princely state was founded by Nathuji, who was a grandson of the founder of the princely state of Gondal, during the middle of the 18th century. The last native ruler of Mengani state was the 8th of his line.
World war II (1939-1945) resulted in shortage of metals. The princely states could not keep up with the demand for coins. To offset the coin shortage, several of the princely states issued “cash coupons” as a substitute.
The princely states sought permission from the British to issue cash coupons but their requests were declined; yet they issued cash coupons, unofficially.
Most of the cash coupons issued were impressions of the revenue stamps on cardboard – some of them had serial numbers and others did not. In some cases, the cash coupons were issued through the state’s treasury and bear the signature of their treasurer. However, there were many cash coupons that were issued without signatures.
Issued in small quantities for a brief period. Now extremely rare
.
