T
heAD-999 Analog Delay was created after careful examination of otheranalog delay units (including the AD900) in an effort to improve uponthem. AD999 comes loaded with 8 Maxon MC4107D BBD's for a total of900 milliseconds of pure, rich, organic analog tone. Like past Maxonanalogs, the AD999's controls have been kept to a minimum to free theunit from unwanted noise and complex operation.
StandardDelay Time, Delay Level, and Feedback controls provide a simple userinterface and a wide variety of delay effects. To improve the unit'sversatility, Wet/Dry outputs were added to allow for panning of thedelay effect between two amplifiers or channels.
TheAD999's tone is pure analog heavenly-rich, round and threedimensional, the AD999 is much more akin to the tone of vintage tapeecho units than either the AD900 or AD9. In comparison to otherdelays, the Maxon AD999's fat, vintage tone has the added benefit oftriple the delay time, yielding many medium to long delay effects.
AD999switching is handled by a Fujisoku 4PDT mechanical switch fortransparent, noise-free true bypass operation. The AD999 has beendesigned to run off 9 volts DC for easier integration into players'pedal boards. An internal, replaceable fuse protects the circuit fromvoltage spikes as well as the accidental use of incorrect adapters.
Thereal magic of the AD999 is in the Delay repeats – they exhibit aslightly over driven tonality that sits perfectly behind dirty tonesand adds depth and dimension to clean sounds. This distortion reactsdynamically to your pick attack, making the initial repeat popslightly while the remaining repeats blend seamlessly with youroriginal notes.
Therepeats also feature a slight EQ spike at around 1.5 kHz, preventingthem from getting muddy or non-descript. This also allows the AD999to maintain presence in a mix without having to raise your volume.
Whilethere are more affordable and more feature-laden
digital
Delays out there, you’d behard-pressed to find one that sounds better than the AD999. Whenplayers wax poetic about the mojo and mystery of analog delay –THIS is what they are talking about!
