This listing is for a NIADAportrait set of Henry Vlll & 6 wives.  This is a portrait  Set created  by the American NIADA artist  Grace Lathrop. Each Queen is marked with a label inside the bottom of the gown with her name. The gowns are made of find quality antique  cotton  velvet. The wives wear antique jewelry and beads, the details are significant and exquisite on each queen as is the detail on Henry.
There is minimal Silk used in some  Costumes Details and bonnets and there is some melting to the silk but this  is very minimal.
The  Labels inside designate the wives Queen Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleaves, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr.
These art dolls are made of  Hand molded clay with hand painted facial features, The body are cloth And Posable the head shoulder plate and arms are hand molded clay. They are light weight like Heizer dolls since the bodies are cloth with wire so they are Posable. Each doll has cloth shoes. Similar to those seen  on Henry  but lady shoes that match the costumes on the ladies.
You must see the zoom photos. These dolls do not photograph as well as the beauty of them.
Grace Lathrop  is an early NIADA artist was a prolific artist in the 1950/60 era. She was from Oregon and she was one of the few artists that was  inspired by Dorothy Heifer as her bodies are cloth like those made by Heizer  but her heads arms and legs are cloth with wire inside so they are Posable. Like Heizer Grace Lathrop made character portrait dolls.
These are stunning Art dolls. It was quite the trend as with a few Early  NIADA  Artists to make portrait dolls of Royalty and famous people.
It is a fascinating study to learn and find dolls by these Early  NIADA artists that have   fine molded details And painted details on their faces and hands. She creates dolls of history and other historically dressed fashion ladies with fine detailed clothing and the hand molded clay details. Grace had her own style in creating dolls that is and unlike any other American artist and is easily identified by people familiar with her work.
There is no strict way to identify these dolls  since many times the clothing has been sewn on and you cannot see a mark.  I know these dolls are by Grace Lathrop, she  was quite prolific and her dolls can be sometimes found on internet sites. A full complete set of Henry and his Wives is a rarity.
    Use
the zoom  feature to view this  hand molded portrait set.  These dolls have been stored away in a box for  about 12 years  In a clean safe environment like all our hundreds of store inventory dolls so they are clean with no odors.
There is a lot to learn about the history of NIADA  And the art dolls these artists create so you will need to review books to learn.  It is not possible me to go into much more detail then I have.
Studying,  supporting the NIADAArtists and enjoying their work has been one of the greatest joys in my Business A Century of Dolls.
